Allen Iverson is a Denver Nugget! Good for Denver Nugget fans, Bad for Denver Nugget fans. As observers of sporting teams(professional and amateur), we tend to have a love-hate relationship with the characters that comprise our beloved or most despised teams. We hate and heckle them when they play for someone elses team and we love and cheer them when they play for ours. These same characters can also adjust our principles of rational thinking.
Iverson will arrive within the next few days with pomp and promise. He will bring visions of Championships, All-Star game appearances and yes ESPN highlights. Iverson will also bring controversy, water cooler debates about his rants and tattoos. If the Nuggets win a world title this year or next, Iverson will be given the keys to our psyches, the same keys that Bill Romonowski turned back in when he departed for the Raiders. Remember Romo? He defined the attitude that helped propel the Denver Broncos to back to back World Championships. While a Bronco, Romo spit on his opponents, grabbed them in questionable areas, busted jaws with his helmet and routinely delivered the late hit. As fans, we loved him and what he brought to the table, yeah he was little dirty, but he was on our team. After he left for the Raiders, one of his first despicable acts was to disable one of our star players, Shannon Sharpe. The rhetoric was predictable, most of it focusing Romo being a dirty player. The player we once loved was now hated by Bronco Nation.
The question becomes, what will Iverson define in his time with the Nuggets? As fans we hope his time is defined in Championships, then we can look past the stuff that kind of bothers us.
